In the 24 years following the handover of the Panama Canal by the Americans, tourism emerged as a national priority. However, the development model adopted for the Pacific coast—characterized by a lack of natural environments, minimal exposure to indigenous culture, limited unique experiences, and an overemphasis on beach and pool activities—has proven insufficient.
As a result, Panama has experienced negative growth in tourism, a rarity in Latin America and the Caribbean. This stark reality serves as a clear indicator that it’s time for a paradigm shift in our product offerings, marketing strategies, and target markets.
We believe the future lies in tapping into the fastest-growing segments of the tourism market, moving away from the traditional all-inclusive, sea-sand-and-pool model towards eco-tourism, wellness, adventure, cultural, and transformative tourism.
